HACKER WEB

MVP Planning / KNOWLEDGE BASE

What Is an MVP for a Web Project and What to Include in the First Version

An MVP is not simply a cheaper, incomplete product. It is the smallest version that already solves the main user problem and allows the business hypothesis to be tested in real use.

HACKER WEB MVP Planning

Define the primary outcome

Start with one main result the product must enable. For a booking service it is a completed reservation; for a CRM it is moving a customer through the operational workflow; for SaaS it is the core action that creates value.

If a feature does not support that outcome and is not a technical dependency, it is a candidate for a later release.

Separate must-have from nice-to-have

Group features into critical, important, and desirable. Critical capabilities belong in the first release, important items can follow after validation, and desirable ideas remain in the backlog.

This is especially valuable for CRM, ERP, marketplaces, and SaaS products where dozens of modules can appear before the core process has even been validated.

MVP still needs architecture

Reducing functionality does not mean ignoring data structures, authorization, APIs, or security. A poorly structured MVP can make the next stage more expensive than building the first version properly.

Identify the core modules, the data they own, and the integrations likely to appear after launch.

Estimate the complete first release

Development effort is more than coding. Discovery, UX, architecture, integrations, QA, deployment, analytics, and initial production stabilization are part of the real cost.

A range with documented assumptions and risks is more useful than a single precise-looking number without a defined scope.

Use production data for version two

After launch, real users show which flows matter, where they stop, which functions the business actually needs, and what technical constraints appear under real load.

The next roadmap should be based on those signals rather than on assumptions made before the first release.
